FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Why do you require us to download special software?

1. To respect the intellectual property rights of our photographers and writers, we may legally only offer the digital magazine to registered subscribers. News agencies and photographers require that the PDF's of the magazine must *not* be freely available on the internet.

2. Our software provides an organized, user friendly interface to your Hinduism Today PDF's. Past issues are stored in a library for your convenience with an easy to access index to past issues. The software automatically downloads, stores the PDF's to their library location and invokes Acrobat reader for you, automatically.

3. A Desktop Client Application (similar to iTunes for music) allows for a much more complete service than is possible through a web application.

3. Broadband users have direct access to our the rich media and audio files that are included with each issue.

Now that I have installed this application, what has been placed on my computer?

1. This Hinduism Today Digital Edition freeware application.

2. The PDF files for the issue(s) you have requested. Each magazine's digital edition consists of five files, totaling around 25 MB. They are organized in the following way:

i. Cover, table of contents and gatefold photo spread

ii. Welcome and summary of Internet resources from Kauai's Hindu Monastery, publisher's editorial, letters, humor, opinion pieces and major articles

iii. Educational Insight section

iv. Additional articles, book reviews and opinion pieces

v. Advertisements

Do I need to be connected to the Internet to read the Hinduism Today Digital Edition?

No. You can read the digital edition of any issue you have downloaded to your computer whether you are connected to the Internet or not. However, you must be connected to the Internet to view the audio and video features, go to active links on the pages, including advertisers' websites, or to download another issue.

What if I'm not connected to the Internet when I click on an audio or video feature?

Adobe Reader, or the PDF viewer you are using, will give you an error message. To experience the audio or video features in the PDF, connect to the Internet and try again.

Is any other software required to view the Hinduism Today Digital Edition?

For Macintosh systems, the Preview application that comes with the Mac OS X operating system software, or Adobe Acrobat Reader, is required to view the PDF files. For computers running the Windows operating system, Acrobat Reader is required to view the PDF files. Apple QuickTime software is required to view the audio and video features on either the Mac OS X or Windows operating system. Adobe Reader is available for Macintosh, Windows and Unix/Linux systems, while QuickTime is available only for Macintosh and Windows systems. Both are available as free downloads from the web using the links below:

How do I read the magazine?

Just click on the link to one of the five sections in the table of contents and the PDF will open in your PDF viewer. Thereafter, you navigate and read inside your PDF viewer.

If you are using Acrobat Reader, the following may be of help to you:

A good strategy is to immediately choose the zoom tool (magnifying glass). Once this is selected, the following keystrokes provide basic navigation:

Cmd-0 or Ctrl-0 (zero) will make the entire page fit on your screen.

Marquee: Click and drag to draw a square around) the area you want to read with the magnifying glass.

Hold the spacebar down and click to drag the image around on the screen.

Cmd + (Ctrl +) or Cmd - (Ctrl -) to zoom in or out.

Click the Bookmarks tab to see bookmarks to the articles. Click on one to go to that page. The last bookmark takes you to the next PDF file of the issue you are viewing.

Page Down and Page Up will flip to the next or previous page.

Close the PDF and return to the Hinduism Today application to view the table of contents and go to another section.

Another navigation strategy we follow is to select "Pages" from the tabs on the left. Thumbnails of each page will appear. You can click on any page and go directly there, or you can click on various parts of the page you are viewing and you will be taken to that sector without moving your mouse.

How do I get help if I am having trouble reading the PDF files?

Reading the PDF files takes place entirely in the PDF viewer of your choice, usually Adobe Reader. If you are using Adobe Reader, you must go to the Adobe Reader support website for troubleshooting assistance. If you are using Preview in Mac OS X, or you are having trouble with QuickTime software for viewing our audio and video features, you must go to the Apple support website for troubleshooting assistance.

What features does the Back Issues button provide?

The Back Issues button opens a catalog of all available digital editions.

The checkbox to the left of each edition indicates whether or not the edition has been downloaded to your computer. If the box is checked, you can read the issue immediately, even if you are not connected to the Internet. If the box is not checked, you can click to download that edition if you are connected to the Internet.

The + or - sign after each entry offers additional information, including the option to delete the files from your computer. Even if you delete the PDF files for an edition, you can download them again later.

Are there archives not in PDF format?

Hinduism Today has been in publication since 1979. Every issue is available online. For issues that were not released in PDF, select "HTML Web Archives" from the "More" pull-down menu. This opens a web page from which you can search our entire library of articles using the Google search field at the top.

Are the audio and video features of the Hinduism Today Digital Edition saved on my computer?

Due to the large size of audio and video files, they are streamed via the Internet and not saved on your computer.

What other online resources are available from Hinduism Today?

In the second PDF of each issue you will find a two-page spread that contains descriptions and links to many of the Web resources available from the publisher of Hinduism Today.

Are photos in the magazine copyrighted?

Yes, they are, and we urge all readers to respect the rights of our photographers, artists and contributors. For the protection of rights-managed images, the registration process assures that the digital version is only available to registered users and is not freely distributed on the Internet.

Can I share the magazine with others?

Yes. Send them to www.hinduismtoday.com/digital/ where they can register for the free digital edition.

Can I send the PDF files to others?

No. When you subscribed to the Hinduism Today Digital Edition you agreed to the Terms of Service and the End User License Agreement which expressly prohibit you from distributing the PDF files that are downloaded to your computer.

Can I still read the Hinduism Today Digital Edition if I cancel my subscription?

As part of your free subscription to the Hinduism Today Digital Edition, you have agreed to receive an e-mail notification when the new issue is released each quarter. It is necessary for us to send you these notification e-mails for auditing purposes. If you later decide to cancel your free subscription, you will no longer receive e-mail notifications and will no longer be able to download new issues using the Hinduism Today Digital Edition software. However, you will be able to continue to read any issues you have already downloaded to your computer. You may at any time reactivate your subscription, after which time you will be able to download new issues.

Where do I go for support if my question is not answered above?

If the problem you are experiencing is taking place while reading the PDFs within Adobe Reader, Preview or another PDF viewer you may be using, you must seek assistance at the website of the developer of the software (see above question, "How do I get help if I am having trouble reading the PDF files?"). If the problem you are experiencing is actually taking place within this application, you may click here to submit a support request.
